New PostNL rates

The Hague – PostNL is introducing changes to its postal stamp rates, implementing the tariff headroom which was given by the Minister of Economic Affairs to ensure the continued execution of the Universal Service Obligation (USO).

The following new rates will apply for letters within the Netherlands and internationally as from 1 January 2014:

  • Basic rate within the Netherlands: €0.64
  • Basic rate for international letters: €1.05
  • Basic rate for franking machines within the Netherlands: €0.56

The tariff for the 2013 December stamp will be €0.55. The business rates will also increase.

The basic rate for sending a parcel will not change.

Minister Kamp stated in his letter to the Lower House on 3 June 2013 that he was creating extra tariff headroom in order to make price increases in 2013 and 2014 possible. These price increases have been verified by the Dutch regulator for the postal market, the Autoriteit Consument & Markt.

The Minister wrote that adjustments across the full range of the USO and its rate regulation are necessary in order to safeguard the future of the USO. The USO is loss-making for PostNL because the number of letters being sent has fallen strongly. PostNL itself has implemented a series of rigorous restructuring plans to ensure maximum cost savings.
